CULTURAL HERITAGE AND HISTORICAL RE-USE IN Graduate Studios

TASKISLA STUDENT CENTER

In this studio project students developed a design for a student center in our historic university building. They were required to research historical preservation precedence and preservation best practices to inform the development of their designs.

As international students visiting Istanbul from universities in Germany and India, we first needed to situate the project within the context of Istanbul and its history. We began with a walking tour of the adjacent neighborhoods including Gezi Park and Taksim Square.

COLLABORATIVE COLLAGE

Returning to the studio with printed images, students combined their images into themes. The collaborative collage work meant that the groups had to articulate their perspective and see the world through the eyes of their studiomates.

PEER-REVIEW

As the projects progressed students peer-reviewed each others’ work. Emphasis here is placing value on each other’s perspective and ideas, while offering advice to overcome design and technical issues.

FINAL PROJECTS

The final projects focused on meeting the needs of the current students in a student community space, while respecting the heritage and integrity of the site.

FINAL PRESENTATIONS

Students presented their final designs to the Assistant Dean who questioned them about the practical implications and feasibility.
